Wise County mass arrest takes down 30

Today, the Virginia State Police, Wise County Sheriff's Office, and Big Stone Gap Police Department agencies will combine forces to conduct a mass arrest of 30 offenders who have been indicted by the multi-jurisdictional grand jury.

These arrests stem from an extensive investigation by the Southwest Virginia Regional Drug Task Force involving illegal drug activity in Wise County. The Wise County/City of Norton Commonwealth's Attorney's Office will provide assistance during the mass arrest.

Individuals targeted for arrest have all been recently indicted by the grand jury for drug-related offenses. Offenses vary from distribution of scheduled prescription narcotics to distribution of marijuana. All of the individuals were indicted pursuant to an investigation code-named Operation Street Sweeper VI. The initial Operation Street Sweeper investigation resulted in the arrest of nearly 50 individuals in April 2006. Street Sweeper II, III, IV, and V resulted in the arrest of approximately 150 more individuals.

The main focus of this investigation has been to target the illegal use and sale of pharmaceutical drugs, which has become a major problem in Southwest Virginia. The illegal use of these types of drugs is the leading cause of drug overdose deaths as well as the catalyst for many of the crimes committed in Wise County and the city of Norton.

"We are making progress everyday in the fight against drugs in Wise County and the City of Norton,"? said Commonwealth's Attorney Ronald Elkins. "We have some of the best law enforcement officers in the state, men and women who have dedicated their lives to protect Wise County citizens. They are in harms-way for our families, and I thank them for it. This mass arrest is another step in keeping Wise County a great place to live."?

I know there were county deputies all over BSG today. Won't do much good though until they get the suppliers....hospitals, doctors, major drug dealers.

When I was at Robbie's market in BSG today I saw a town officer and a trooper show up next door and arrest a fellow. I'd say that was probably one of the 30.

WISE "? Authorities targeted 30 individuals in Wise County on Thursday in the latest of a series of anti-drug investigations and mass arrests over the past two years.

"Operation Street Sweeper VI"? was launched Thursday as members of the Virginia State Police, Wise County Sheriff's Office and Big Stone Gap Police Department fanned out to serve arrest warrants based on indictments by the multi-jurisdictional grand jury.

The sixth in the Street Sweeper series includes a range of charges including distribution of scheduled prescription narcotics to distribution of marijuana.

The focus of Street Sweeper VI was the illegal use and sale of pharmaceutical drugs that have become a major problem in Southwest Virginia, said Wise County Commonwealth's Attorney Ron Elkins. The illegal use of prescription medicines is the leading cause of drug overdose deaths as well as the catalyst for other crimes committed in the county and Norton, he said.

The initial Street Sweeper operation resulted in the arrest of nearly 50 individuals in mid-April of last year. The ensuing four operations resulted in the arrest of approximately 150 more individuals on a variety of drug charges. Street Sweeper roundup by 3 p.m. on Thursday are residents of Big Stone Gap unless otherwise indicated. Those arrested and their charges include:
